Patterns in the Archive

“What is the power of the archive of memory, if it is not, to guide our futures? I believe that it is necessary to be present and to bear witness of today. This year however, has made me consider more and more how important it is to also look back; to take time, to absorb, process and fully understand; to hold space for the annotations that we have made and allow them to grow into thought and clarity that will show us better ways. To make change we have to first see what has to change…or perhaps, what has not changed.” - Gulshan Khan.

2020 Joop Swart Masterclass
For the first time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Joop Swart Masterclass took place online over a period of four months, and 24 participants and eight masters were selected to make the program more inclusive. The educational experience of the Joop Swart Masterclass is based on an assignment to produce a photo essay around a given theme. This year the theme was ‘Reset’.

From July to October 2020, the participants worked on their projects and received mentorship and guidance from the mentors.
