A New Vision
The horizons of the World Press Photo Foundation are expanding, because everything about the world, the press, and photography, is changing.
The world is a network of complex and diverse identities, with both everyday pleasures and persistent conflicts, human love and ideologies of hate, small struggles and global challenges, all of which are illuminated by the power of visual storytelling. In this world, we are independent and impartial, connecting people who give us insights about the challenges we face.
The essence of journalism is providing reliable information through the discipline of verification. Accuracy, impartiality, fairness, transparency, and accountability are the core values we promote, and World Press Photo’s integrity is maintained when we put them into practice. New technologies have expanded the ways and means of doing journalism, meaning it is no longer synonymous with the printing press. The rise of digital technologies and the Internet has transformed the way we produce, publish, circulate and consume visual stories. Amidst this upheaval, our advocacy of free inquiry, free expression, free speech, and a free press is stronger than ever.
Photography is a lens-based practice which employs a sensor or film to produce a picture. World Press Photo cherishes its heritage and supports the continued importance of photography. With the rise of new technologies, there are now numerous imaging practices. We serve the community of visual journalism, incorporating those who work with photojournalism, documentary photography, infographics, interactives, multimedia, video journalism—and things that have not yet been invented—to give us high-quality visual stories.
