Lindokuhle Sobekwa, South Africa

Ezilalini (The Country)

Ezilalini (The Country) follows the photographer’s journey from South Africa’s Eastern Cape to Johannesburg in search of opportunities. By travelling back and forth, Sobekwa documents the opposition between ‘home’ (Eastern Cape) and ‘away’ (Johannesburg) to understand how these places are seen by both the older and the younger generation, while also trying to reconnect with his family, identity and culture.

Lindokuhle Sobekwa is a South African visual storyteller born and based in Thokoza. He uses visual storytelling as a way to share personal stories and of those in his environment.

2020 Joop Swart Masterclass

For the first time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Joop Swart Masterclass took place online over a period of four months, and 24 participants and eight masters were selected to make the program more inclusive. The educational experience of the Joop Swart Masterclass is based on an assignment to produce a photo essay around a given theme. This year the theme was ‘Reset’.

From July to October 2020, the participants worked on their projects and received mentorship and guidance from the mentors.
