Lion dance in the marketplace. The tradition dates back to the days when lions roamed the area around the village. Kayar is dependent for its livelihood on the rich fishing grounds offshore. Everything that is caught is used: the fish is eaten fresh, smoked or dried, while the heads are used as chicken feed. A deal struck recently between the government of Senegal and the European Union, giving EU trawlers access to these seas, now threatens to upset the traditional, sustainable village economy.
