Background story

Beit Lahia, Gaza Strip

Jamila (40) was injured by a missile that hit her legs, during ‘Operation Cast Lead’, carried out by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on targets in the Gaza Strip in 2008. She lives in Beit Lahia, is now disabled, and in need of treatment. The IDF conducted the operation in response to Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel. Gaza suffered extensive infrastructural damage, and the region’s continuing isolation means rebuilding and repair remains slow. A World Health Organization report said that 48 percent of Gaza’s health facilities were damaged or destroyed during the offensive.
