In the run-up to the Russian Presidential election, Boris Yeltsin joins the band. The demonstration of energy did not dispel worries about his poor health, and before the year's end he had to undergo a heart bypass operation. In the two-round election Yeltsin convincingly defeated ten other candidates including his main rival, the Communist Party's Gennady Zyuganov.
