Background story

Pyongyang, North Korea North Korean leader Kim Jong-il attends a military parade, together with his youngest son and designated successor Kim Jong-un, in Pyongyang on 10 October. Until then, Kim Jong-un had rarely appeared in public or been photographed. The elder Kim, said to be in poor health after apparently suffering a stroke in 2008, had hurried his youngest son’s steps to succession in previous weeks. In September, Kim Jong-un, believed to be in his late twenties, was appointed a four-star general and given two significant positions in the party. It appeared that his elder brothers were either uninterested or deemed unsuitable for the position.
