Road kill: The venomous Australian brown snake is drawn to the warm road to raise its body temperature. Thousands of Australia's native animals are killed annually on the expanding network of roads crossing the outback. Housing developments and deforestation have already reduced natural habitats, and roads add a further hazard for local fauna.
