Nuer and Dinka chiefs engage in mock hand-to-hand combat at the opening of a peace conference, in a purpose-built village. Decades of conflict between these two southern ethnic groups, further complicated by ongoing strife between north and south, has meant in the past that the population could not settle to grow its own food. Severe famine has followed. Many people walked for days to get to the peace talks, which were brokered by the New Sudanese Council of Churches.
