Dr. Reeta Gurung of the Tilganga Eye Center performs a corneal transplant using corneas harvested from the temple, 500m from the hospital. Intense ultra-violet light at high altitudes in Nepal causes cloudy cataracts and eventual blindness. Over 70 per cent of blind people in Nepal suffer from cataracts but the condition is easily treatable. Eye Camps have been set up in remote parts of the country to alleviate the problem, and in the capital Kathmandu an eye bank co-ordinates cornea donation.
