Hollandse Hoogte for Metro

01 January, 1999

Refugees shelter at a camp following renewed hostilities. The civil war between Unita resistance forces led by Jonas Savimbi, and the governing MPLA under President Eduardo dos Santos has gone on almost continuously since independence in 1975. Landmines make farming dangerous and villages have been burned. More than a million Angolans have been made homeless since the collapse of peace agreements and renewed fighting at the end of 1998. Many live in abandoned factories, railway stations and makeshift camps in the cities.
