Civil war between the governing MPLA and UNITA resistance forces in Angola began soon after independence in 1975, and lasted, with fragile periods of peace, until 2002. Renewed fighting in 1998, after once such a peace period, led to more than a million Angolans being made homeless. Many lived in abandoned factories, railway stations, and makeshift camps in the cities. Since 2002, Angola has maintained political stability and has made economic progress, although large numbers of people still live in poverty.
