A polar bear lies sedated on the ice near Kaktovik. It was shot with a tranquillizer dart by a United States Geological Survey scientist, researching the health of polar bear populations worldwide. As fears of global warming mount and the bears' habitat appears increasingly threatened, scientists are debating preemptively including them on the endangered species list.
