At the funeral of white farmer Gerhard Koen, black farm workers are kept at a distance. Koen was allegedly shot by the security police at Ventersdorp, North West province, during riots when the ultra right wing Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB, Afrikaner Resistance Movement) and the South African police clashed for the first time in 43 years of Apartheid. The AWB tried to disrupt a speech by South Africa’s President De Klerk in Ventersdorp. During the rioting, four people were killed.
